Basic social service delivery plays a crucial role in strengthening the legitimacy of governments in post-conflict countries. With the bulk of Timor-Leste’s population living in rural areas, the delivery of these services is the most obvious interaction most people have with their Government. The UN works to help strengthen basic services and their delivery, focusing in particular on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, education, and food security. Women’s and girls’ education key theme of International Women’s Day

“When every child has an education the entire nation prospers, and I emphasize that education for women and girls will ensure a platform for greater democratization of development,” Ameerah Haq, Special Representative of the Secretary-General, told a gathering in Dili at an event celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March.

Timor-Leste has made “remarkable progress” since the violence that disrupted it in 2006, but the long-term goals of recovery and development may prove even more challenging, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Timor-Leste (SRSG) Ameerah Haq said in front of the Security Council which had a debate on Timor-Leste.

Dili, 25 February 2010 - Continuing its support to Timor-Leste, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) has approved the financing of a new, three-year $4.1 million joint programme to strengthen human security in Timor-Leste and help Government efforts in the attainmen of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Bilingual edition of the Timor–Leste penal code is launched.

 

Dili, 22 February 2010 - A ceremony was held at the Court of Appeal in Dili on Friday, the 19th of February 2010 to release the printed bi-lingual edition of the penal code of Timor-Leste. 1000 copies of the book were printed with the financial support of the UNDP Justice System Programme (JSP). The book contains the Timor-Leste penal code in both Portuguese and Tetum. The UNDP JSP also continues to provide technical and human resource assistance to the Court of Appeal.

Dili, 04 February, 2010 - Gender Resource Centre of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste -- Deputada Fernanda Borges and members of Committee A of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste held a seminar on domestic violence on 3rd February. “We need to better understand the situation of Timor-Leste in terms of domestic violence so that we can pass a law that is grounded on our reality,” she said at the seminar at the Novo Horizonte Hotel in Metiout, Dili.

Dili, 5 February 2010 - SRSG Ameerah Haq held her first meeting with Timorese NGOs and civil society groups at the NGO Forum headquarters in Dili, this week. A group of about 60 people from member organizations discussed a range of issues related to peace, security and development.
