Electoral

The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste together with the United Nations Development Fund provided strong material and advisory support to the national electoral management bodies for the 2007 national elections. The support was provided to the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) and the National Commission on Elections (CNE) in the lead to and during the First Presidential electoral round, Second Presidential electoral Round and the Parliamentary Elections. The support provided by UNMIT/UNDP greatly helped enhance the institutional and human resources skills within STAE and CNE and also within the political parties.

Following the 2007 electoral cycle, longer-term support was recognized as needed from the UN to help develop the capacity of the electoral authorities and political parties, particularly in the lead to the Suco (village) elections and municipal elections. As such, the current electoral assistance has now shifted from mainly material assistance to a focus on human capacity and institution building in the critical inter-election period. The UN’s overall objectives for 2008 – 2009 are to help strengthen and widen the principles of democracy and good governance and enhance participation thus contributing to the political stabilization in Timor-Leste.
