  • 14 Dec 2009 - More than 30 percent of maize grain produced in Timor-Leste is lost every year due to insects and other pests. This equates to about 44,000 tonnes of staple food becoming unavailable to the Timorese people, and is nearly equivalent to the amount of rice annually imported into the country.

    Dili, 10 December 2009– On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Timor-Leste (SRSG) addressed the special session of Timor-Leste's National Parliament to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The special session was dedicated to consideration of the rights of women and female children in Timor-Leste.
  • 07 Dec 2009 - Dili, 5 December 2009- Today the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Timor-Leste (SRSG) Atul Khare and Deputy Prime Minister José Luis Guterres presided over the ceremony marking the resumption of primary responsibility for the conduct of police operations by the Polícia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL) in the District of Viqueque.

  • 20 Oct 2009 - Dili, 14 October 2009- The Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, received Ms Kirsty Sword Gusmão at UNESCO Headquarters. Ms Kirsty Sword Gusmão is the wife of the first President of Timor-Leste, Mr Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, and current Prime Minister of the country. She established the Timor-Leste National Commission for UNESCO, which she also chairs.
  • 20 Oct 2009 - Dili, 20 October 2009- Malaria, a disease without borders, has recently received a boost here in Timor-Leste. Today, with an additional 62 personnel recruited to work in the country's malaria control programme, districts and sub-districts in Timor Leste will now have the resources to tackle this disease.
