  • 07 Jul 2008 - 19 September 2006, DILI—UN Police (UNPOL) yesterday made a second arrest for an incident that occurred on 1 September at the Jardim Internally Displaced Persons' (IDP) camp near the sea port in the capital of Dili in which five people suffered gun shot injuries when a group of men carrying firearms fired into the crowd at the camp.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - 27 September 2006, DILI — A first group of twenty-five members of the Policia Nacional de Timor Leste (PNTL) has this week resumed duty under a mentoring scheme being run by the United Nations Police (UNPol). Eighteen of the 25 have been assigned to general patrol duties, a further five have been assigned to the Dili detention centre, and the remaining two are working in the UNPol communications room, all in co-location with UNPol.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - 29 September 2006, Dili: On the 28th of September, at 2h30 pm, the President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Cláudio Ximenes, swore in international judges Ivo Nelson de Caires Batista Rosa (from Portugal) and Telma Angélica Figueiredo (from Brazil) to perform functions as judges in the district courts of Timor-Leste. The two judges were recruited by the UNDP Justice System Program. Both candidates have extensive experience as acting judges in their countries.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - UNMIT is an entirely new mission for Timor Leste. It was established on August 25th this year by the UN Security Council, and its full mandate is spelled out in Security Council Resolution 1704.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - 12 October 2006, Dili—With over 50,000 internally displaced people living in makeshift camps in and around the capital city, continued low level fighting in the streets, and elections due to take place in the coming year, UN officials in Timor-Leste at a joint press conference today said that restoring public security is an absolute necessity.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - Dili, October 12th (UNMIT) - The UN's Acting Special Representative, Finn Reske-Nielsen, this week urged Timor Leste's parliament to speed approval and promulgation of vital electoral legislation. In an address to the 88-member assembly on Wednesday Reske-Nielsen said both timing and process of approval were critical if elections scheduled for 2007 are to proceed on time and be free of disputes.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - A high-level international team overseeing the integrity of Timor-Leste's 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections has arrived in Dili this week on its first mission ahead of next year's polls. The Electoral Certification Team members are Reginald Austin (Zimbabwe), Lucinda Almeida (Portugal), and Michael Maley (Australia). They were appointed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on October 13th.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - 9 November 2006, Dili--- United Nations Police has stepped up patrols in Dili's local communities. Dili residents should notice the heightened number of police patrols, as UNPOL puts a significant number of new vehicles into service.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - 15 November 2006, DILI—Eric Tan Huck Gim has been appointed as Deputy Special- Representative for the Secretary General (DSRSG) for Security Sector and Rule of Law for United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT). Mr. Tan is a retired Brigadier General from the Singapore Armed Forces.
  • 07 Jul 2008 - 17 November 2006, Dili--- Forty-five United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) arrived in Timor-Leste this week to begin their work supporting the nation with its fast-approaching first post-independence 2007 national elections. Originating from 21 different countries, the electoral UNVs, comprised of 29 men and 16 women, bring with them extensive elections experience.
