UN LAUNCHES GROUNDBREAKING MULTIMEDIA WEBSITE ON TIMOR-LESTE

Dili, 30 November 2012 -
The United Nations today launched a groundbreaking new multimedia website, Momentum.tl, that pays tribute to the achievements of the people of Timor-Leste since they embarked on the path of independence in 1999 and marks the departure of UN peacekeepers from Timor-Leste after 13 years.

The launch of the website follows the confirmation by the UN Security Council that the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) will withdraw from Timor-Leste by 31st December.

Containing hundreds of photos and interviews and 55 exclusive videos chronicling every aspect of life, culture and progress in Timor-Leste since the Popular Consultation of 1999, the Momentum.tl site (http://www.momentum.tl) is the first of its kind for a peacekeeping mission.

The Momentum.tl website features:

  • 55 new and exclusive videos including: the reaction of a Timorese family when former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announces the result of the Popular Consultation in 1999; footage of the 2012 Tour de Timor mountain bike race which for the first time passed through neighbouring Indonesia; a moving video of a women seeking justice for domestic violence and; artist Cancio 'Cassimata' Ximenes reciting a powerful poem on forgiveness
  • 12 online photo galleries containing more than 250 images dating back to 1999, many never released before
  • Key UN documents dating back to 1975, a timeline of the UN presence in Timor-Leste, an interactive map, infographics and links to other online resources on Timor-Leste
Launching the Momentum.tl multimedia portrait through a message on the new website (http://www.momentum.tl), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: "The people of Timor-Leste have shown unswerving resolve to overcome great challenges, and the nation's leaders have exercised wisdom and responsibility in guiding the country through testing times. As we look ahead to the many remaining tasks, we can draw inspiration from these successes.
"This multimedia exhibition showcases the energy that Timor-Leste and its people bring to culture and celebrations, peaceful elections, education, sports, street life and markets – all aspects of the nation-building that will continue into the future. I hope all of those who view it will draw inspiration to tackle the many global problems we face.
"Even as UNMIT departs, the United Nations will remain steadfast in our support for the people and Government of Timor-Leste as they build a better future."
