Head of UN peacekeeping mission meets with both presidential candidates

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Timor-Leste
 

Dili, 2 April 2012 – The head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) met with both presidential candidates ahead of the second round run-off election.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ameerah Haq, congratulated Taur Matan Ruak and Francisco "Lu-Olo" Guterres on their success in the first round of the presidential election. She believes that both presidential candidates are well qualified to lead this country.

Ameerah Haq commended the candidates on the peaceful conduct of their campaigns. She appreciated the candidates' strong messages to their supporters to respect the democratic process, and she counts on the continuation of a calm and constructive electoral period.
 
Ameerah Haq reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to supporting this year's electoral process.
