Jackie Chan in Timor-Leste to promote marital arts for peace

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and action film star Jackie Chan paid his first visit to Timor-Leste from 24-26 June to promote the use of martial arts for peace.

The kung fu expert met with children and martial arts groups in Dili and the districts, and led several hundred martial arts students at the National Stadium in a martial arts routine. He also passed on the advice his father gave him 40
years ago. "Son, (there are) three things to remember. Never get close to drugs, never get involved in a gang, and never gamble," he said.

According to UNICEF, martial arts are extremely popular in Timor-Leste, but tension between different groups has often resulted in violence. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, who joined Mr. Chan at the event, said he hoped the star's visit would help teach Timorese youth to live a life based on the highest
principles of the martial arts.
