Timorese media pledge support of 100 Days of Peace campaign

The heads of Timorese media organizations have pledged their support of the 100 Day Peace Campaign leading up to the International Day of Peace on 21 September.

The theme of the campaign in Timor-Leste - What are you doing for peace? - invites all Timorese people to consider their personal contribution to creating peace in Timor-Leste.
At a press conference in Dili held on 29 July, Rosario Martins, Director of Radio Timor Leste (RTL), Mouzinho Lopes, Editor-in-Chief of the Timor Post, Otelio Ote, Director of the Dili Weekly, Francisco da Silva, Director of the Timor-Leste Media Development Center, and Nelson Filomena da Cruz, winner of the 2008 Timor-Leste Journalist of the Year Award, discussed the importance of media and journalists in creating peace.

Mr. da Cruz told the gathering that the media contributes to the development of society by forming a bridge between the government and the grassroots. "Each individual journalist also contributes to peace by providing accurate and balanced information to the public," he said.

UNMIT's National Spokesman Hipolito Gama said peace could mean many things to many different people. "It can mean the peace people feel receive from their family, community or faith," he said. "We want everyone in Timor to think about peace, to talk about it and to consider how their individual actions are contributing to peace," he added.

Between now and September 21, a variety of activities will take place around the country to celebrate peace. UNMIT will be raising awareness through radio and video programs, posters, and public outreach activities. The media outlets will sponsor a national competition for journalists on the campaign's theme.
