UNMIT announces the death of one police officer

Dili, 21 June 2010 - Two Portuguese police officers, members of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), were in the vehicle, which left the road. They were en route from Dili to handle a routine ordinance disposal task in the Viqueque district.

Master Sergeant Hermenegildo Almeida Marques, age 47 years, died shortly after being evacuated to the UN medical clinic in Dili. A second Portuguese FPU officer received non-critical injuries in the accident and has since been evacuated to Darwin, Australia, for further medical treatment.

The mission extends its condolences to the family of the deceased as well as to the Portuguese contingent and his FPU colleagues.
