Clarification on press reports about regulation of private security companies
Dili, 24 November 2010 - The following statement is issued by the UNMIT Spokesperson's Office:
Mr. Andre Thorsen, an adviser on the regulation of private security companies who has been working under UN auspices in Timor-Leste, recently made a presentation on the subject at the request of Timor-Leste authorities.
At the meeting in Dili on 18 November, a question was asked about private security guards carrying firearms. Mr. Thorsen replied, "Your private security companies do not want their guards to carry firearms and I agree with them completely."
The UN's view is that any decision on this issue is a matter solely for the people and the competent authorities of Timor-Leste.
