Finn Reske-Nielsen appointed Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Timor-Leste

 

Dili, 18 June 2012 – The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, appoints Finn Reske-Nielsen as Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Timor-Leste and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste.

Finn Reske-Nielsen will serve as head of the UN Mission until the envisaged closure of UNMIT at the end of 2012. He also retains his functions as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Timor-Leste.

"I was deeply honoured by the Secretary-General's request that I serve as Acting Special Representative for Timor-Leste," said Reske-Nielsen. "Timor-Leste has long been my home and I have been privileged to witness first-hand the remarkable progress of the past several years. I am excited to take up this new role, at such an important time for the Country."

This is Finn Reske-Nielsen's third post in Timor-Leste. Since June 2006, he served as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for UNMIT. From 1999 to 2002, Reske-Nielsen was UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Timor-Leste.
Reske-Nielsen has 35 years of experience with the United Nations. His previous appointments with the UN include Zambia, Papua New Guinea, New York, Geneva, Namibia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
