SRSG Khare meets with Japan's Foreign Minister Nakasone

Dili, 9 February 2009 - On 9 February, SRSG Khare called on Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone of Japan to brief him on situation in Timor-Leste, and to exchange views on Japan's contribution to peacekeeping and peacebuilding in Timor-Leste. The meeting took place at the beginning of SRSG Khare's two-day bilateral visit to Japan, ahead of his travel to New York for the meeting of the Security Council on Timor-Leste, scheduled to take place on 19 February.

Foreign Minister Nakasone warmly welcomed the SRSG, especially at this important juncture when Japan has taken on the Chairmanship of the Core Group on Timor-Leste and assumed the role of the President of the Security Council for the month of February, the month when the Security Council will hold an open debate on Timor-Leste to discuss, inter alia, the mandate of UNMIT which expires on 26 February. Foreign Minister Nakasone acknowledged the important role played by the SRSG and UNMIT in the improvement of the security situation in Timor-Leste. He added that UN needed to stay in Timor-Leste for some time to come. Foreign Minister Nakasone affirmed Japan's continued interest to support Timor-Leste and to cooperate with the UN in this regard. Foreign Minister Nakasone wished UNMIT all success.

SRSG Khare thanked Foreign Minister Nakasone for the warm welcome and the strong support that Japan has given to Timor-Leste and the work of the United Nations in the country. He briefed Nakasone on the planned process of gradual resumption of responsibility by the PNTL as well as the upcoming suco elections. SRSG Khare said that he was confident that with the engagement of Japan, Timor-Leste would continue to be a success story for the United Nations.
