First created by six Timorese photographers and the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT), the object of the exhibition is to promote peace and reconciliation in the country. Initially, the show opened in Timor-Leste on UN Day in 2007 in the country's capital Dili. The show continues to tour the districts throughout the country. Currently, in Timor-Leste, the show will be on exhibit in the district of Ainaro from the 26th through the 29th September. The majority of the photographs feature the work of Timorese artists with UNMIT contributing several photographs of its peacekeeping activities.
UNMIT was established by the UN Security Council in August 2006 to support the Government in "consolidating stability, enhancing a culture of democratic governance, and facilitating political dialogue among Timorese stakeholders, in their efforts to bring about a process of national reconciliation and to foster social cohesion." Additionally, UNMIT continues to focus its efforts on assisting the Government in undertaking a comprehensive review of the future role and needs of the security sector, strengthening the rule of law, promoting a culture of democratic governance and fostering economic and social development.
The exhibition at UN Headquarters was co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the United Nations, UNMIT and the UN Department of Public Information. It will be on view until the 25th September in New York Headquarters.
