Closure of UNMIT

The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste completed its mandate on 31 December 2012. The establishment of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) was preceded by a number of other UN operations or missions deployed in Timor-Leste beginning in 1999.

The Australian Prime Minister meets UN Special Representative in Dili

Dili – 15 February, 2008 During a quick visit to Dili today, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd met briefly with Special Representative of the Secretary-General Atul Khare.

Mr. Khare thanked the Australian Prime Minister for the additional contribution of security personnel after the shooting incidents earlier this week and told Mr. Rudd that the addition deployment of 210 military and police personnel would be of great assistance in apprehending the perpetrators of the attacks.

Mr. Rudd thanked the UN for its support and for the recent statement of the Secretary-General, and told the Special Representative that he was confident Australia and the UN would together help Timor-Leste succeed.

The two men also spoke about the ongoing training and mentoring of the National Police of Timor-Leste, and Mr. Khare expressed appreciation for Australia's willingness to assist with significant long-term bilateral training assistance.
