Closure of UNMIT

The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste completed its mandate on 31 December 2012. The establishment of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) was preceded by a number of other UN operations or missions deployed in Timor-Leste beginning in 1999.

Timor-Leste has made "remarkable progress" since the violence that disrupted it in 2006, but the long-term goals of recovery and development may prove even more challenging, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Timor-Leste (SRSG) Ameerah Haq said in front of the Security Council which had a debate on Timor-Leste.
