UNMIT commemorates one-year anniversary of Haiti earthquake

Dili, 13 January 2011 - Staff of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) gathered at Obrigado Barracks this morning to commemorate all who died in the earthquake in Haiti one year ago, and to show solidarity with the people of Haiti in their devastating loss.

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) Ameerah Haq, paying tribute to those who died in the 12 January 2010 earthquake, noted that 102 were UN staff.

"Let us pay homage to the victims. Let us pay tribute to the survivors' courage, and let us acknowledge the commitment and compassion of all involved in the emergency relief effort that unfolded in the painful days that followed."

The names of the UN dead were read out by an assembly of UNMIT personnel – civilian, police, and military.
