MESSAGE ON THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF TIMOR-LESTE

29 February 2012

As the 2012 Presidential election gets under way, I congratulate the people of Timor-Leste and call on all candidates to conduct their activities in a peaceful and democratic manner.

The election represents another milestone since the restoration of independence. Over the past decade, peace and economic growth have replaced conflict and strife.

Timor-Leste's political leaders have clearly expressed their desire to continue along this path. State institutions have demonstrated the experience, capacity and confidence to plan and manage elections effectively. Voter registration, including among young people, has been high.

Thanks to the diligent work of so many people across the country, I am confident in the prospects for a peaceful, credible and transparent election.

However, as we all know, peace and stability cannot be taken for granted. They must be nurtured every day.

The successful conduct of this election will be critical for consolidating peace and stability in Timor-Leste.

On behalf of the United Nations, I wish the people of Timor-Leste all the best and pledge our full support as you continue building a better future.
