The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste completed its mandate on 31 December 2012. The establishment of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) was preceded by a number of other UN operations or missions deployed in Timor-Leste beginning in 1999.

Momentum: Timor-Leste forges a vibrant future

Timor-Leste has a landmass of 15,410 square kilometers.

  • Timor-Leste includes the eastern half of the island of Timor, the Oecusse exclave within Indonesian West Timor, and the islands of Atauro to the north and Jaco to the east.
  • The official languages are Tetum and Portuguese. More than 30 local languages, as well as Bahasa Indonesia and English, are spoken across the island.
  • The population is about 1.2 million: 61 per cent is under the age of 25.

The people of Timor-Leste have an expression in Tetum that captures their vision of inclusive nation-building:

“Husi lorosa’e to’o loromonu, husi tasi feto, to’o tasi mane, Timoroan hamutuk.”

“From the east to the west, from the north to the south, all Timorese together.”
